You do not need a tech background. You do not need to be an “AI person.” You need seven days and one small task at a time.
This is the plan I give friends who feel behind. It works because it is small on purpose.
The seven days
Day 1: Just talk to it. Open ChatGPT or Claude. Ask it to explain something you already know well. See how it does. Get comfortable.
Day 2: Rewrite something. Paste an email you already sent. Ask it to make it shorter and warmer. Notice what you would keep and change.
Day 3: Summarize something long. Paste a long article or a report. Ask for five bullet points. This is the fastest “oh, I get it now” moment.
Day 4: Plan something small. A dinner, a weekend, a to-do list. Ask it to organize your messy thoughts into a plan.
Day 5: Ask it to teach you. Pick something you have been meaning to learn. Ask it to explain like you are smart but new. Ask follow-up questions.
Day 6: Use it for work. Take one task you did today and ask it to help you do the next one faster. First draft, outline, or checklist.
Day 7: Make it yours. Tell it a few things about you and your work, and ask it to remember them. Now it starts every chat already knowing your context.
The only two rules
- Be specific. The more context you give, the better it gets. Tell it who you are, what you want, and what “good” looks like.
- Talk back. If the answer is off, say so and ask again. You are not bothering it. That is how this works.
That is the whole week. Seven small tasks, no jargon, nothing you needed a degree for. By Sunday you will not wonder whether AI is for you. You will already be using it.
